Pilot (1959)

# Title Original airdate
Pilot "The Flagstones" November 2006 (on Boomerang)

In November 2006, it aired on the Boomerang Network, and was released on DVD in 2001 and again in 2004.

Note: This was the original pilot episode for 'The Flintstones', but was never shown with the original series. It was actually a 90 second "demo reel" (with grease pencil marks still visible on the film), designed to sell the series to potential advertisers in the winter of 1960, depicting a scene from what would eventually become the episode "The Swimming Pool". Daws Butler provided the voices of Fred and Barney, June Foray was Betty (her appearance was somewhat redesigned for the actual series), and Jean Vander Pyl was Wilma (the only actor from the pilot to regularly reprise their role for the actual series). The pilot was re-voiced for the Cartoon Crackups DVD release for unknown reasons with Henry Corden as Fred, Frank Welker as Barney, Tress MacNeille as Wilma, and Betty Jean Ward as Betty. All other releases of the pilot use the original voice track.

Kenneth Muse was the animator.

Season 1 (1960–61)

# Total Title Original air date
1 1 "The Flintstone Flyer" September 30, 1960 (1960-09-30)

Fred fakes illness so he and Barney can get out of taking their wives to the opera, as the night coincides with a Bowling Championship. Using Barney's home-made prehistoric helicopter as a means of escape, the two then join their bowling team for the tournament. They almost get away with their scheme, until loose-lipped Barney gives away their night's activities. Note: on this and many other early episodes, Wilma and Betty are depicted as domestically abusive wives. In later episodes this happens only occasionally (those others included Peek a Boo Camera, Buffalo Convention for example); most episodes, though, usually show them as good-natured but a little short-tempered.
